MY  RIO

Nivaldo Vieira de Andrade Junior, National President of the Brazilian Institute of Architects (IAB)

Born and grown in Salvador, Nivaldo Andrade discovered Rio de Janeiro while attending architecture school in Bahia in the early 1990s. He came to the city for a students' meeting and landed in Lapa at Fundição Progresso. Even before the revitalization process implemented in the region, that little corner of the Center enchanted the youth for its diversity, both cultural and architectural styles. "Until today, every time I come to Rio, I find a way to go through Lapa and celebrate life that exists in that traditional space," he says.

Passionate about the city, Nivaldo highlights that this is precisely one of the aspects that makes Rio de Janeiro unique: street life, rare in large Brazilian urban centers. A daily life, according to him, that is underlined by the architecture and urban projects that make up the scenario of Rio de Janeiro. "All the big names in this area have come here," he recalls. The biggest one, according to Nivaldo, is Oscar Niemeyer, who had the ability to use concrete as if it were liquid. "Rio's greatest beauty is its integration between the exuberant nature and what man has produced. And at Casa das Canoas (Niemeyer's work), this meeting is complete," says Nivaldo.
