13/02/2020 12:08:00

Mayor Marcelo Crivella inaugurated, on Tuesday, February 11, the Square of Circum- Navigation, in the port area of the city, in the Center region, in the presence of Mrs. Berta Nunes, Secretary of State of the Portuguese Communities.

The square is a tribute to the Portuguese navigator Fernão de Magalhães who began the first circum-navigation trip across the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans, completed by Sebastián Elcano in the 16th century. This venture allowed the discovery of a new way to the Indies, where the coveted spices came from.

In his speech, Crivella highlighted the historical ties between Brazil and Portugal and emphasized how the Portuguese contributed to the history of mankind through their achievements during the period of Great Sailings.

Also present were Mr. Jorge Cabral, Ambassador of Portugal to Brazil, Mr. Jaime Leitão, Consul General of Portugal in Rio de Janeiro, and the Commander of the School Ship Sagres, Frigate Captain Maurício Camilo.
