ST. SEBASTIAN - PATRON SAINT OF THE CITY OF RIO DE JANEIRO

The feast of St. Sebastian blends Portuguese traditions, ancient folklore and Roman Catholic rituals with Afro-Brazilian rites. Ceremonies in churches and streets feature plenty of red coloring – the votive shade of the city’s patron saint. In voodoo temple-yards, drums set the beat for chants and dances in honor of Oxossi, voodoo king of the jungle. This date also marks the end of Twelfth Night revelries. Ceremonies organized by Rioarte before the statue of St. Sebastian at Praça do Russel, stage the history of this martyr. The main event is an evening procession carrying the saint’s statue from the Church of São Sebastião dos Capuchinhos in Tijuca to the Metropolitan Cathedral, where it is robed for blessing at a Mass held by the Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro. Immediately following, the procession continues as far as the statue of St. Sebastian, at Praça do Russel.

FOUNDATION OF THE CITY OF RIO DE JANEIRO 439 YEARS
Founded by Estácio de Sá in l565, its name comes from an earlier comment made by André Gonçalves, commander of the expedition responsible for surveying the land discovered by Cabral. On January1, 1502 he discovered an estuary that he thought must be the mouth of a great river, and called it Rio de Janeiro - January River. He was wrong about the river, but the name stuck. And the wonderful January “Rio” has continued to flow, a generous stream of love and beauty that still today fills everyone who comes near it.

JUNE BONFIRE FESTIVAL

June bonfire festivals are among the most appealing aspects of Brazilian folklore. Throughout the city, in streets, squares, clubs, schools and churches, mini country villages are set up with stalls of seasonal delicacies and games, decorated with little flags, banners and lanterns. Square dancing and a mock country wedding take place by the light of bonfires and fireworks. The tradition of dancing around the bonfire and leaping over the flames used to be common throughout Europe, as part of various rural mid-year festivals. In Rio, these festivities are centered on the feasts of St. Anthony (13th), St.John (24th) and St. Peter (29th).

MÚSICA LÍRICA NO CINEMA
Tuesdays from noon to 6:30 pm
Free entry

Throughout June a selection of films will be shown in which music is as important as story and images.

Mario Lanza, known to the public and critics as actor and opera singer, will be present in three productions: the 1949 "That Midnight Kiss" that made him a star, - "The Great Caruso" in which he played the part of tenor Enrico Caruso and - "Seven Hills of Rome" a 1957 production and one of his last films.

Another high point is the performance of Ilona Massey in the film "Balalaika". The blond actress with the husky voice, pleasantly enigmatic and frequently compared to Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo, had in this musical comedy of 1939 the greatest triumph of her career.

ARRIVAL OF OYMPIC TORCH IN RIO DE JANEIRO

This is the first time the Olympic Torch crosses the five continents and Rio de Janeiro has been chosen by the Athens Olympic Organizing Committee (ATHOC) to represent South America.

The Olympic Torch arrives in Rio de Janeiro on June 13. Its route starts in Maracanã. From then on the first participant begins the relay on a course of about 48 km to be covered within eight hours.

All the athletes that have been awarded gold medals in the Olympic Games will be nominated by COB to take part in the relay.

The show at the closing of the Passage of the Olympic Torch in Rio will assemble several Brazilian artists of different styles, such as Samuel Rosa,
Paula Toller, Rita Lee, Gilberto Gil, Zeca Pagodinho, among many others. They will present only one song each in a musical relay.

The Greek Andreas Varotsos, who designed the Torch, drew his inspiration from the olive leaf, a symbol of peace and freedom all over the world.
68 cm long, it is made of metal and olive wood and weighs 700 grams.

Innaugurated on Copacabana Beach, a clock, replica of the Athens Torch, indicates the days to the relay that will go through several districts of Rio.

BRAZILIAN GRAND PRIX HORSE RACE
The Gávea Racecourse, a multifaceted blend of sport, leisure, fashion, high society, betting, elegant receptions, distinguished visitors and turf enthusiasts. Its Louis XV style architectural beauty, its privileged location near scenic Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon and proximity to the beaches makes it a Rio de Janeiro landmark. On this August 1st it is Jockey Club and "Grande Prêmio Brasil" day, the day of elegance and style, of bets and flashbulbs, of victories and handicaps. This day the red flag is unfurled at the top of the mast preceded by the siren which indicates that the horses must go to their boxes at the starting gate. And, of course, the day of the tote, ready to confirm a "dead cert" from a close friend or, who knows... refute it.

FOLKLORE DAY
The term was created by William John Thoms (1803-1885), a researcher of European background who, on August 22 ,1846 published an article entitled “Folk-Lore”. He choose two old Saxon roots: “Folk”, meaning people, and “Lore”, meaning “knowledge”, to give shape to “Folk-lore, knowledge of the people. As time went by, the two words lost the hyphen and became one single word: Folklore. This was how it was spelt in Brazil until the orthographic reform that substituted the letter k. The diversity of legends, myths and beliefs of Brazilian folklore make it one of the richest in the word.

HALLOWEEN
Celtic folklore takes on a Brazilian beat at this witches feast. This occasion is rooted in the beliefs of the Celts of Ireland, Wales and Northern Scotland, who celebrated the year on November l with a feast to the sun god and Samhain, the lord of death. Giant bonfires were lit to strengthen the sun and scare away evil spirits that brought desease to their herds. The Catholic church turned this festival into a celebration of the saints on November l, called All Halows Day, giving rise to the name Halloween, a corruption of Hallow’s Eve.

CHRISTMAS
Christmas in Rio differs from that in other parts of the world while
keeping the universal theme of peace and love. Various types of tropical
trees decorated with lights and adornments substitute the Christmas pine
trees and the sun takes the place of the snow. Santa Claus, though, is the same that inhabits the dreams of children everywhere with his red clothes and white beard.
The traditional nativity scene is displayed in all the churches where the
birth of Jesus is celebrated at midnight on December 24.
In the downtown area, cultural centers and churches open their doors to
concerts, choirs and Christmas carols. Aterro is decorated with gigantic
trees covered with colorful lights and Lagoa (Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon)
receives a tree tall enough to be seen from any position on Epitácio Pessoa and Borges de Medeiros Avenues.
All the city is an invitation to confraternization party, the joy that the Christmas spirit imprints on the people.

NEW YEAR'S EVE
Only people who have spent New Year's Eve in Rio can understand why this is the second most important event on the city's calendar. Nowhere else in the world could white-clad crowds of two million people gather in a setting as breathtaking as Copacabana beach, honoring the departing year and greeting the twelve months that lie ahead in total harmony, peace and safety.
The velvety summer sky is the backdrop to one of the world's most spectacular fireworks display. On the sand, white-robed believers light thousands of flickering candles and toss flowers as offering to Iemanjá, queen of the waters, all to an irresistible Brazilian beat. December 31 at midnight on Copacabana Beach is a magical moment every year. Thrilling, unforgettable and incomparable, it truly reflects all the faces of Rio.
