PRE-CARNIVAL EVENTS
The weeks preceeding carnival are filled with the best parties and the most exciting rehearsals of bands and groups, samba shows at Terreirão and final rehearsals at the samba schools, technical rehearsals at the samba schools, technical rehearsals in Passarela do Samba and visit to the Samba City. The effervescent atmosphere starts to heat up the musical instruments which get ready experience the jow of the greatest popular celebration in the world.
Technical Rehearsing Season at the Sambadrome
The City of Rio de Janeiro is already experiencing the mood of Carnival 2010 with the rehearsing of Samba Schools from Special and Access Groups, to begin on December 06.
The entrance to the grandstandsis open to the publicand “Pagode da Marquês”shall present some of the stars of Brazilian Popular Music at the end of Sunday schedules, on the stage erected in front of section 3.

An open air courtyard where the Samba Land presents performances during the weekend before Carnival, and continues at full steam ahead on the Champion's Saturday. Stalls offer typical food and dring, while a huge stage draws all attention, with Brazilian top music shows.

This year the city promotes the biggest popular party in the world, Carnaval, from February 12 to 16. There will be several pre-carnival events and the official closing will be on February 20, Saturday of Champions, with the parade on Passarela do Samba of the winning samba schools, a show of extraordinary beauty. Besides that, the awarding of the three best bandstands will bring joy and fun to the city's districts.
CARNIVAL 2010 OPENING CEREMONY
The Mayor of Rio symbolically hands over the keys to the city of King Momo thus opening the Carnival festivities. The event also includes the Carnival King Momo, Queen and Princess.

Traditional meeting place for Carnaval among the Cariocas, the Cinelandia Ball, founded in 1990 has since been one of the biggest street spectacles, welcoming over 60 thousand people during the five days of the event. Carnaval’s greatest idols perform on a stage set up in front of Rio’s Municipal Chamber. The public can dance and sing to famous by-gone Carnival songs by famous artists.

GOOD FRIDAY
A day of fasting and abstinence for many Christians. The ceremony at the San Sebastian Cathedral begins at 3pm with a commemorative liturgy celebrating the Passion and Death of Christ. After the service at 5:30pm, the faithful accompany the Procession of the Dead Lord, headed by the Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro Dom Orani Tempesta, who will bear the Holy Fragment of the Cross.
The Church of Our Lady of Copacabana holds a Procession of the Dead Lord passing through to the streets to the sound of drums, with Roman soldiers leading the way with the chant of Veronica, Our Lady of Dolors and the Dead Christ at 8 pm.

The first Inter-American Indigenous Congress, held in Patzcuaro, Michoacán, Mexico, on 19 April 1940, picked this date as American Indian Day. In Brazil, this Resolution was enforced by Decree-Law nr 5-540 issued on 20 June 1943. On 19 April 1953, was inaugurated in Rio de Janeiro, the Indian Museum.

Celebration of National Gypsy Day. The 1st temple in Latin America dedicated to St. Sara Kali.

JUNE BONFIRE FESTIVALS
June bonfire festivals are among the most appealing aspects of Brazilian folklore. Throughout the city, in streets, squares, clubs, schools and churches, mini country villages are set up with stalls of seasonal delicacies and games, decorated with little flags, banners and lanterns. Square dancing and a mock country wedding take place by the light of bonfires and fireworks. The tradition of dancing around the bonfire and leaping over the flames used to be common throughout Europe, as part of various rural mid-year festivals. In Rio, these festivities are centered on the feasts of St. Anthony (13th), St.John (24th) and St. Peter (29th).

NATIONAL SAMBA DAY
The idea of having a day to celebrate samba was born at the closing of the I National Congress that took place between November 28 and December 2, 1962 when Samba Day was instituted. Created by decree, the date is a tribute to artists and all those who through the years have turned Carnaval into the greatest expression of Brazilian popular culture.
On 9 October, 2007, IPHAN, the National Artistic Heritage Institute advisory committee voted the approval of the Carioca samba as cultural heritage of Brazil in its three main forms of expression: “partido alto” samba, backyard samba and samba storylines (plots).

CHRISTMAS
The streets are bustling with the coming and going of Cariocas doing their Christmas shopping. The idea is to find a surprise gift for someone special. It is the desire to share the unique Christmas spirit, with friendship, peace and love.
The city is full of lights. The decorations and colored lights on The Flamengo Aterro, the lights along the sea-fronts and the decorations of the shopping malls, attract mainly the children, with the traditional presence of Santa. Downtown, the cultural centers and churches open their doors to Christmas carol concerts. The mangers in the churches invite one to reflect, as well as being special attractions at the Nossa Senhora da Paz church.

nEW YEARS'EVE
The special atmosphere, full of magic and hope, are typical of the Carioca New Year. New Year´s Eve is considered to be the 2nd greatest event in Rio´s tourist calendar, bringing together millions of people along Copacabana beach front, nearly all wearing white, to watch the spectacular firework display, which brings in the New Year.
