Mayor Paes joins the
Global Commission
on Economy and Climate
In May, Mayor Eduardo Paes was appointed as a member of the Global Commission on Economy and
Climate.
The Commission, chaired by Felipe Calderón, former Mexican
President, is currently integrated by 21 leaders who distinguished
themselves, such as former heads of state, Ministers of Finances and
leaders related to this area. The members of the Commission guide the
results and help to spread out ideas in their networks. It was created by
an independent initiative of seven countries: Colombia, Ethiopia,
Indonesia, South Korea, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom, with the
purpose of helping to conciliate economic growth and emission reduction.
The Commission’s first project, The New Climate Economy, was started
in September of 2013, with the purpose of providing independent and
legitimate evidence on the relations among actions which may strengthen the
economic performance and also those which reduce the risk of harmful
climate changes. The core team is led by the program´s director, Jeremy
Oppenheim, and counts with the partnership of several research institutes,
besides an advisory panel composed of eminent economists.

Conferences parallel to the 2014 World Cup
From June 12 to July 13, entrepreneurs, authorities, regulatory
agencies and investors attended the Rio Conferences series, with over 100
national and international speakers. The conferences, organized by Rio Negócios and the Industrial
Development Company of the State of Rio de Janeiro (CODIN), and held at the
Museu
de Arte do Rio (MAR), aimed at
b2b matchmaking and attracting investors to the City of Rio de
Janeiro, in five priority sectors: Health, Technology, Infrastructure,
Audiovisual, and Oil & Gas. The first series of the conferences were
held in London, during the Olympic Games of 2012.
MAR wins 2014 Architizer Architecture Award
The Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR)
won the prestigious 2014 Architizer Architecture Award by popular vote in
the Museum category. Other nominees include the Danish Maritime Museum
(Helsingor, Denmark), Heydar Alieyev Center (Baku, Afghanistan), the
Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam, Holland) and the Zhujiajiao Museum of Humanities
& Arts (Shanghai, China).
The Architizer A+Awards is considered the most
important architecture award in the world and consists of 60 categories.
The first stage of the award is decided by a jury composed of 200 skilled
professionals, followed by popular vote for the five finalists of each
category.
The greatest challenge of the project designed
by Bernardes Jacobsen Architecture was how to adapt three existing
buildings in order to form MAR: the old Dom João Palace, built in 1910, the
former central bus station of Rio and the Civil Police Hospital, a 1940
building. Besides the museum, the complex includes the Escola do Olhar, an
academic art program, focused on image culture, education and curatorship,
focusing on students and teachers from public schools.
1st
Resilient Rio Workshop
The Municipality of Rio de Janeiro, with the support of the Konrad
Adenauer Foundation, held on June 2nd the first Resilient Rio
Workshop: Adaptation and Resilience Plan of the City of Rio de Janeiro.
The event, which took place at the Rio Operations Center
(COR), and brought together specialists and scientists on environment,
meteorology, urbanism, risk reduction and climate change in order to review
the development of a resilience plan for the city to be launched by the end
of the year. Among the participants there were representatives from the
Mayor’s Office, Municipal Secretariat of Environment (SMAC), Municipal
Secretariat of Conservation (Seconserva), Pereira Passos Institute (IPP),
C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, COPPE/UFRJ Rio de Janeiro Federal
University, National Institute of Spatial
Research (INPE), Gesellschaft für
Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), CEMADEN/Brazilian Ministry of
Science, Technology and Innovation, Rockefeller Foundation, COR, FIOCRUZ, Economy Institute (IE/GEMA/UFRJ) and Rede Clima.
Visit of
King of Belgium
King Phillippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium inaugurated the new
street sign of Queen Elisabeth Avenue (between Copacabana and Ipanema) on
June 21st, emphasizing the role of Queen Elisabeth as a great
patron of the arts and founder of the International Queen Elisabeth
Competition (1937), currently sponsored by Her Majesty Queen Mathilde (http://www.cmireb.be/). The King and the
Queen also laid a wreath at the monument of King Albert I, located in the
Queen Elisabeth Avenue.
Later in the afternoon, the Head of International Relations of the
Municipality, Mr. Laudemar Aguiar, presented to King Phillippe and a
delegation of Belgian entrepreneurs
the investment opportunities in the city of Rio de Janeiro, as well as the
major projects of urban transformation underway in Rio which will ensure
the legacy of the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Buddy Bears in Rio

An initiative of the German Consulate in Rio de Janeiro, the exhibition
United Buddy Bears was brought to Brazil. Entitled “The art of tolerance”,
it was held from May 01 until July 20, at Leme Beach. The event reinforces
the image of the City of Rio de Janeiro on the international cultural
circuit.
The exhibition´s World Circuit started in 2004 and has already taken
the 141 bear statues, one of the symbols of the city of Berlin, throughout
26 cities in all five
continents.
Each bear is two meters
tall and was created by an artist from each country having hosted the
exposition. The exhibition represents a tour throughout foreign cultures, with
the purpose of strengthening ties among countries and also fostering
tolerance, and was held in the closing of “Germany+Brazil 2013-2014”.
The Municipality of Rio
de Janeiro provided logistical support and the necessary licenses. The Municipal Secretary of
Tourism, Mr. Antonio Pedro Viegas Figueira de Mello, and Mr. Laudemar
Aguiar, Head of International Relations, attended the official opening of
the exhibition.
International
Relations Department in the World Cup
The International Relations Department (CRI) provided 24/7, around the
clock support to foreign consulates during the 2014 FIFA World Cup. CRI
coordinated the emergency contacts of 195 embassies and consulates, sharing
data with other municipal agencies, hosting preparatory meetings and also
providing support material to the consulates regarding contacts and
relevant information as the city
welcomed 471,000 foreign fans and tourists during the World Cup
including caravans from Chile, Argentina and Belgium.
During the matches played at Maracanã Stadium, CRI staff were on
duty at the Rio Operations Center, often accompanied by consular
representatives, in order to facilitate the coordination with other
federal, state and municipal agencies in emergencies involving foreign
visitors.
This operational expertise will contribute to the planning of future
international events, particularly the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

2014 World Cup:
Fans Feel at Home
Several countries established Hospitality Houses in Rio de Janeiro
for the FIFA World Cup, providing a venue for the gathering of their nationals
and descendants living in Rio and also promoting cultural and commercial
activities.

The main venues were the House of Russia, located at the Museu de Arte
Moderna (MAM), the House of Switzerland, at Palafita Kitch (Lagoa), and the
House of Japan, at Parque da Bola – Jockey Club.

These venues continued
to operate even after their national teams concluded their participation in
the Cup, carrying out workshops, exhibits as well as social and
gastronomical events.

Visit of the Ambassador of Uzbekistan
On June 13th,
the International Relations Department received the visit of the
non-resident Ambassador of Uzbekistan in Brazil, Mr. Bakhtiyar Gulyamov, at
Palácio da Cidade. Among the topics discussed, the commitment of
transforming the cooperation agreement between the cities of Tashkent and
Rio de Janeiro into concrete projects of cooperation was mentioned.
Ambassador Gulyamov expressed his commitment to facilitate the
participation of his country in the celebrations of the City´s 450th
Anniversary in 2015. Afterwards, Ambassador Gulyamov visited the urban
renewal project of the port region of Rio de Janeiro, Porto Maravilha.
Visit of Russian Organizing Committee for 2018
World Cup
Rio de Janeiro received
the visit of an official delegation from the Organizing Committee for the
2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, with representatives of the regions and
cities hosting the Cup. On June 18th, the Brazilian and Russian organizing
committees exchanged best-practices and shared experiences in organizing
the World Cup. The purpose of the delegation´s trip to Brazil was visiting
the host cities of the 2014 World Cup and learning about the requirements
and challenges on the organization, logistics and infrastructure of the
venues.
Visit of Qatar Organizing Committee for 2022 World
Cup
Mrs. Theologia Kostopoulou, Manager of International Relations of
the Qatar Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy visited the host
cities of the 2014 World Cup, as part of the preparatory process to host the World Cup in 2022. The
International Relations Department received the Manager of International
Relations of the Committee, Mrs. Theologia Kostopoulou, on June 23rd.
