Rio's City Hall starts SAFER RIO program operations

On December 3, Rio’s City Hall launched operations of the SAFER RIO program. Teams of the Municipal Guard, State Military Security Forces and other municipal agencies began integrated operations in the neighborhoods of Copacabana and Leme, South Zone of Rio.
The program aims to act in the prevention of urban disorder and small crimes. The areas that are part of the project count on the increase of 280 men of the Municipal Guard and State Military Police to the effective current teams, to operate 24 hours a day. These agents will be supported by two minibuses as operating bases, ten Radio Mobile Patrol cars and 33 motorcycles, as well as safety cameras and police dogs (K-9) Unit.
The initiative foresees a greater participation of GM, allied to additional state police officers hired by Rio City Hall through an agreement with Proeis (State Program for Integration in Security), which will be funded with SEOP's own resources and, starting in March 2018, with an increase in Special Public Order Fund (FEOP).
According to Mayor Marcelo Crivella, these neighborhoods were chosen for the pilot project because they are the gateway into the city for tourists and that the SAFER RIO program will extend in the future throughout the city.

 



Rio City Hall signs agreement with russian Olympic City Group

On November 28th, Mayor Marcelo Crivella signed a letter of intent alongside the president of the Russian Olympic City Group, Aleksei Semenyachenko, in which the last one proposes to develop, at no cost to the municipality, a pre-proposal for a public-private partnership project to build a "suspended city" on top of the railway line between Central do Brasil and Leopoldina station, where several commercial and residential enterprises will be installed. The construction work is estimated at R$ 8 billion, which should be raised with the private sector.
In a ceremony held at the City Palace in the Botafogo district, representatives of the City Hall and the Russian company, whom the mayor had met in May during a trip to Moscow, explained that the Olympic City Group will carry out an extensive study for the elaboration of an occupation plan of the area and to analyze, among other topics, what changes would be necessary in the urban planning legislation.
The construction works are due to begin in early 2019. The Mayor of Rio highlighted that the project is part of a plan called “Rio Without Walls”, whose idea is to transform the railway line between Méier and Santa Cruz neighborhoods into underground transportation.




Mayor received letter from Chinese company that intends to donate LED lamps to Rio

http://riomailemm.rio.rj.gov.br/image?ci=1&mi=4989&name=LED.jpgOn December 13th, Mayor Marcelo Crivella received a letter of intent from the Chinese company Foshan Ningyu, pledging to donate LED lamps with monitoring cameras and Wi-Fi attached to it to be installed in strategical areas of the city.
The company Foshan Ningyu also expressed its interest in participating in the bid that will be opened for the Public Private Partnership (PPP) for a project which is aimed at providing the replacement of the city's 450,000 light points for LED lamps. According to the concept of smart city, the current lamp posts would be replaced by the "smart" models. In addition to updating the public illumination system, the measure will generate savings for the city's coffers, with an expectation of a 57% reduction in electricity spending, according to a study carried out by the World Bank.
The agreement is already one of the results from the trip the Mayor made to China last month. The work is expected to be completed in three months, and Chinese Zhu Huichong, a representative of Foshan Ningyu, also announced that the group intends to invest R$ 200 million to install an LED lamp factory in Rio.



Rio City Hall Program is highlighted at Bloomberg Cities 


The Carioca Early Childhood Program (PIC), of the City of Rio de Janeiro, was featured in the Bloomberg Cities publication by the Mayors Challenge, a challenge promoted by Bloomberg Philanthropies, focusing on public sector advances and innovations in cities around the world.
According to the article from the American news agency, Carioca Early Childhood plays a key role in providing social assistance to children under the age of six as it connects all sectors of municipal administration that have policies dedicated to this portion of the population.
"The program is focused not only on child development, but also on the family as a whole. We plan to reduce the infant mortality rate to 9.5 per 1,000 residents in the next two years," said Ana Carla Prado, government integration manager at the City Hall Executive Office.


 

Rio Promotes Trade and Economic Exchange between China and Brazil

On November 21st, Mayor Crivella received a delegation at the City Palace in Botafogo with about 30 Chinese businessmen and representatives of commercial and industrial entities from Macao and Shenzhen. The meeting was attended by the Chinese General Consul in Rio de Janeiro, Li Yang, and several institutions and private companies from Rio de Janeiro.
The mayor stressed the importance of promoting economic, commercial, technological and cultural relations between the two countries and reaffirmed the goal of uniting Rio with the initiative of Chinese President Xi Jinping to resume the Silk Road.
The leader of the group of Chinese businessmen, from the Institute of Promotion of Trade and Investment of Macau, Gloria Batalha Ung, explained what motivated the trip to Rio.
- We made this trip with the aim of getting to know more about the investment environment in Brazil and to exchange with public bodies and companies in order to know and explore the opportunities for cooperation - said Ung.
The meeting was organized by the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) and the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macao), in partnership with the International Relations Department of Rio City Hall.

Rio Municipal Secretary of Culture participates in the 42nd. Cultural Mercosul meeting

The Municipal Secretary of Culture, Nilcemar Nogueira, welcomed the participants of the 42nd. meeting of the Mercosur Cultural - the meeting of Mercosul ministers. This was the last of 16 thematic meetings that took place during the second half of 2017.
On behalf of Mayor Marcelo Crivella, the Secretary received the Ministers of Culture of Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Argentina and Uruguay. Nilcemar highlighted the secretariat's vision for the cultural policies implemented in the year 2017 in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
"A concern of our management is to think of culture not only as entertainment, but as a vector of human development. We see culture as a possibility to improve the living conditions of the holders of knowledge and symbolic goods. May we learn more about the forms of cultural expression in all Mercosul countries that resemble us in the brave form as they stand.
During the meeting, the results of the thematic meetings (Heritage, Arts, Diversity and Creative Economy) were presented. A platform of artistic residencies was also launched in Mercosul, a magazine on cultural diversity and a handbook of accessible audiovisual productions.

Vice Mayor receives Chinese delegation to discuss transport

Vice Mayor and Municipal Transport Secretary Fernando Mac Dowell received Chinese investors from Shandong Province on December 1st, interested in knowing the achievements and projects of the transportation area, as well as seeking possible partnerships between Rio and province.
Mac Dowell presented the municipal transportation system, studies for improvements, talked about the importance of the development of the Port and its positive consequences for the city and the expansion of the subway.

 

Rio joins the Urban20 initiative

The Chief of Government of Buenos Aires, Mr. Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, and the Mayor of Paris and Chair of the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, Ms. Anne Hidalgo, launched the Urban 20 (U20) initiative on December 12th, during the One Planet Summit, in Paris. U20 will bring together the Mayors of the world's leading cities in Buenos Aires to enrich the agenda of the G20 debates from an urban perspective.
More than 30 cities in the G20 member countries were invited to join the U20 as part of the "Global Cities" group. The mayors of the world's major cities will meet in Buenos Aires in October 2018 to discuss current urban problems. The cities of Paris, Chicago, Los Angeles, Sao Paulo, Sydney, Milan, Madrid, Tokyo, Seoul, Jakarta and Rio de Janeiro, among others, have already confirmed their participation. In addition, other major urban centers around the world were invited to participate as observers.


Municipal Guard of Rio participates in security fair in the USA

The mayor of Rio, who chaired the meeting, highlighted the importance of the presence of the Municipal Guard in the event to inspect cameras, non-lethal equipment, surveillance and modern techniques to bring to Rio.
"The great news that has been given there are the cameras on the streets. This is how we can have a police force multiplied with the use of technology, instead of people, which lowers the costs. Many light posts have cameras and rely on centers like the one here (COR), which oversees the vity and, thus, avoids crimes"he explained.
Representatives of Rio's Public Security and Municipal Guard participated in the conference, which provided an exchange of experiences on equipment, technology and public security policies. The city council of Rio intends to bring the meeting, which has been held in the United States for a century, to the city.



Rio City Hall promotes HIV prevention action

The Special Coordination of Sexual Diversity (CEDS RIO), in partnership with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), a non-profit social organization represented in Brazil by the Impulse Group, and the Pela Vidda group, promoted several activities to alert World Day Against HIV / AIDS, on December 1st.
Quick tests were available for HIV virus detection - an oral test performed with saliva fluids at Marechal Floriano Square in Cinelândia neighborhood, downtown Rio.
NGO volunteers and CEDS Rio employees distributed kits containing information material on the prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), condoms (male and female), and a lubricating gel.
CEDS Rio, together with the Municipal Health Department (SMS), developed prevention activities at public events, prostitution points, and the street population throughout the year. At Carnival, for example, more than 1.2 million condoms and 236 thousand units of lubricating gel were distributed.

The Vice Mayor and Municipal Secretary of Transport, Fernando Mac Dowell, welcomed representatives of the European Parliament at the City Hall on November 1st. Members of delegations from countries such as Portugal, France and Italy attended the meeting.
The European Parliament delegation came to Brazil due to the negotiations on the cooperation agreement between the European Union and Mercosur. The visit to Rio aimed at identifying interests and potential areas for cooperation with the municipality, as well as discussing the advantages that an agreement between the two blocks can generate to Rio. 
During the meeting, Mac Dowell also presented mobility plans for the city of Rio de Janeiro, such as the intelligent traffic light system, in addition to the project to improve the Port of Rio de Janeiro.



Workshop marks the second phase of the Rio-Paris cooperation agreement

Workshop on the theme "Revitalization of public spaces” marked the second phase of the Rio-Paris cooperation agreement, on 14th of December, in Rio. The president of the Rio Heritage Patrimony Institute (IRPH), Augusto Ivan de Freitas, opened the event with a brief introduction on French cooperation in urbanism in Rio followed by the word of the Deputy Consul General of France in Rio, Jean-François Laborie.
In the first half of the workshop, the Atelier Parisien d'Urbanisme (APUR) presented the methodology for the revitalization of the seven squares selected as the focus of the cooperation agreement, and in the second half, the Under-Secretariat of Urbanism presented the information compiled for the Roberto Campos square (in Estácio neighborhood), then presented the area of the Projected Streets A and B (Avenue Presidente Vargas and SAARA) and finally the Rio World Heritage Institute presented Largo do Machado.
The Rio-Paris cooperation agreement signed in 2016 is valid until 2018 with a total budget of 85 thousand euros for technical cooperation. Now the Parisians will make a report, with the summary of what was discussed, that will be delivered to Rio City Hall in January 2018.



 Mayor introduces investment projects in Rio during Dubai-Brazil Seminar

On December 14th the Mayor of Rio, Marcelo Crivella, participated in the opening of the Dubai-Brazil Opportunities Seminar, Gateway to Brazil, promoted by the International Relations Department of Rio's City Hall, which brought together businessmen from various sectors, such as construction, agriculture and tourism, at the Museum of Art of Rio (MAR), in Praça Mauá
The seminar aimed at introducing the Dubai Development and Investment Agency to Brazilian stakeholders to discuss investment opportunities in both countries and cities, as well as bringing programs, initiatives and companies closer together. The event occurred in response to the Mayor's trip to Dubai in October this year. In his speech, the Mayor highlighted Rio's efforts to reinvent the city and improve the quality of life of Rio citizens.
In this opportunity, Mayor Crivella presented projects that are open for investment in the city of Rio, such as the "City Without Walls", which aims to reduce inequalities by creating parks and green areas where there are currently train stations; Porto 21 - creative district ", in the revitalized area of the Port of Rio, with an area of 1.7 million square meters, focused on the development of activities in the innovation and creative industry sector, among others.
The CEO of Dubai Development and Investment Agency (FDI), Fahad Al Gergawi, took the opportunity to showcase the attractions that Dubai offers to strengthen the bilateral relationship. The audience counted with the Minister of Industry, Foreign Trade and Service, Marcos Pereira; FINEP Innovation Director Victor Odorcyk, Executive Director of Investment Support and Promotion (Dubai FDI), Khalid Alboom; and the President of Rhythm UAE, Jamal Said.

 UN and Rio sign cooperation agreement under the " Line Up, Live Up" Program

On December 1st, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODC) and the Undersecretariat of Sports and Recreation of the city of Rio de Janeiro signed a memorandum of understanding during the event in Rio de Janeiro to formalize cooperation in the field of "Line Up, Live Up" program, a global initiative of the UN office that uses sports as a means to prevent violence and crime among young people.
The signing marked the closing of an exchange of experiences held this week in Rio with the participation of Physical Education professors, sports managers and specialists from countries such as South Africa, Bangladesh, Belgium, Colombia, India, Kyrgyzstan, Palestine, Peru, The Dominican Republic and Uganda. Workshops and visits to Olympic Villages and sports projects were organized in Rio.
During the event, SUBEL's undersecretary stressed the importance of the agreement that serves vulnerable youth. "Drug trafficking is extremely harmful to children and adolescents. In Rio de Janeiro, we already have information that trafficking is recruiting young people under the age of ten", he said.



Mayor of Rio signs letter of intent in Shanghai  

Mayor Marcelo Crivella met with Mayor Ying Yong in Shanghai on November 11th and signed a letter of intent on cooperation and exchange between the two cities, aimed at deepening the relevancies in the areas of finance, innovation, culture, tourism, among others.
Knowing that China is Brazil's largest trading partner and Shanghai is China's economic center, the Mayor emphasized the importance of this partnership for the development of the city of Rio.
"Rio de Janeiro responded positively to the Chinese 'One Belt One Road' Initiative and plans to accelerate urban infrastructure and port construction. Companies in Shanghai are welcome to participate in the cooperation. With the signing of the letter of intent for cooperation and exchange between Rio de Janeiro and Shanghai, I believe that more cooperation will be achieved in the areas of economy and commerce, urban construction and culture“, he declared.
Mayor Yong said Shanghai will encourage local companies to participate in the construction of Rio with the goal of accelerating a series of measures such as urban infrastructure.

UN conducts safety training for employees and partners in Rio

The United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) in Brazil held a training course in Rio de Janeiro from December 5th to 7th for 50 UN officials, representatives of partner NGOs and other state entities.
The objective of the program “Safe and Secure Approaches in Field Environments (SSAFE)” is to ensure the safety of UN System personnel and enable them to cope with hazardous situations in their activities.
In its tenth edition, the training was attended by representatives of UN agencies, funds and programs, as well as partners and related entities, such as the Military Police, Fire Brigade, Brazilian Red Cross, military of the Joint Peace Operations Center of the Brazil (CCOPAB), as well as companies and security managers.

4th Edition of Rio Travel Market

 


On November 16th, Rio hosted the 4th edition of the Rio Travel Market event, where several booths were set up to promote tourism in the city. Counting with the presence of Rio Convention & Visitors Bureau director Michael Nagy, the current superintendent of BHG Hotels, Paulo Michel and Mauricio Werner da Riotur. The meeting addressed Rio's collective desire for growth and rise in global turism markets through the calendar of events and their ramifications. The representatives showcased diverse and interesting services for the tourist as well as for the carioca.



Hundredth anniversary of Finland is celebrated in the Christ the Redeemer



Dozens of historic monuments around the world were illuminated in celebration of Finland's 100th Independence Day. One of the most impressive shows was in Rio de Janeiro, where the statue of Christ the Redeemer was lighted in blue and white to resemble the Finnish national flag.




 IOC and UN Women renew partnership to empower women and girls through sport



The IOC and UN Women signed, on November 17th, the second Memorandum of Understanding for the next five years of the program aimed at empowering girls and young women through sport, the project was implemented in poor areas of Rio as a legacy project Olympic Games of the Rio 2016 Games and will continue under this partnership framework in Brazil and potentially in additional countries.

 
 

1st International Expomídia in Rio



The National Syndicate of Radio communications Companies - SINDER / SP and the Rio de Janeiro State Press Association - AIERJ, promoted the 1st Expomídia Internacional, on December 12th, at the SulAmérica Convention Center, in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
The event aimed to create an agenda with the participation of journalists and communicators. As opinion makers, they play a very important role in the organized international civil society. In this occasion they discussed innovations, trends, legislations and a series of topics linked to the segment and of great importance at the present time.
There where 10 countries, 60 speakers and 90 stands with the exhibition of products and services. With professionals and national and international companies (Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, Uruguay, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, New Zealand, Mexico, China, USA, Italy and Russia), the broadcast was live on TV AIERJ and Radio AIERJ. The the event featured interpreters of Chinese, English, Spanish, Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) and information in Braille.

 



1st edition of PcD City Fair arrives in Rio

 

The Superintendent of the Rights of the Person with Disabilities, Mauro Alves (Superintendence attached to the Municipal Secretariat for Citizenship and Human Rights), participated in the opening of the PCD Rio de Janeiro Fair in 2017, on December 1st, in Arena Carioca, Parque Olímpico / Barra, an event that ended on December 3rd, the date on which the International Day of People with Disabilities was celebrated.

According to Mauro Alves, "the participation was highly positive considering that the fair was about inclusion, assistive technologies, accessibility and mobility, themes and challenges that we have to face in guaranteeing the rights of people with disabilities," explained the superintendent.
