New Year celebration in Copacabana receives a peak audience of 2,4 million people

The most traditional Carioca New Year Celebration was highlighted in various vehicles of the international press. At Copacabana Beach, the Réveillon, promoted by the Municipality of Rio through Riotur, had a peak audience of 2,4 million people.
The main theme of this year´s celebration was “HUG”, and it occured an awesome display of fireworks in Copacabana, in 17 minutes of pyrothecnic show. Twenty five tons of multicolored fireworks were fired from eleven barges.
The Réveillon Celebration had the participation of many artists, including Anitta, Frejat, Cidade Negra and Belo, besides presentations of samba schools of Rio de Janeiro. According to estimates from Riotur, the city welcomed about 910 thousand tourists in the period of Réveillon, moving about R$ 2,3 billion. According to a survey conducted by ABIH/RJ ( Brazilian Association of hotels industry - Section RJ), the hotel occupancy was on average of 97%.

Municipality of Rio makes an assessment of first year of management


On the 22nd of January, the Mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Marcello Crivella, and his Secretariat presented an assessment of the first year of management, in Cidade das Artes (City of Arts), east zone of Rio. Besides showing what was achieved in 2017, is was made a forecast of the main actions envisaged for this year, in the areas of health, education, sanitary surveillance, public order, among others.
Among the mentioned issues, the Mayor highlighted the international missions occurred during the year of 2017, aiming Public Private Partnerships in the areas of Urbanism and Street Lighting.
“In China we were in contact with Mayors of Hangzhou, Beijing and Shanghai; and also with important building companies and generators of public lighting, to lure them to our PPP, for the substitution of 430 thousand bulbs, for we pay 20 million of energy bills monthly and there is a possibility of paying 10 million, with a better and less polluting lighting” declared the Mayor.”A Chinese company has donated 2 million Reais in bulbs for the city of Rio de Janeiro, which will be installed in our city; in Downtown, Lapa and Copacabana. And they have committed if they win the bidding process which will be launched in the early days after Carnival, to install a factory of LED bulbs in our city of Rio”, he added.





Rio de Janeiro signs Memorandum of Cooperation with the city of Guiyang

The document was signed by Ambassador Antonio Mello, Coordinator of International Relations of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro and the Head of the Departament of Publicity and Member of the Municipal Committee of Guiyang, Mrs. Lan Yitong.
This meeting took place in the context of the official visit of representatives of Guiyang to Rio with the purpose of participating in the celebrations of the Spring Festival and the Chinese Cultural Week, events which were hosted at Cidade das Artes (City of Arts). Besides strengthening the cultural and economic ties with Rio, this Chinese mission was born after the trip of Mayor Crivella to China in November last.


 

New software of Museum of Tomorrow includes campaigns of ONU Brazil


The new software of Museu do Amanhã (Museum of Tomorrow) began including projects of the United Nations in Brazil which encourage actions seeking a fairer world. The campaigns included in the platform are the following: #VidasNegras,Somos Refugiados’ and #IBelong, of ACNUR; the campaign for the equality of rights “ Free and Equal”, 50 for Freedom’ and Forum of Companies and LGBT rights, of OIT; and ‘ Elas por Elas’, Planeta 50-50 and Una-se, of ONU Women.
Inaugurated in December 2017, IRIS+, the new cognitive assistant of Museu of Amanhã, in Rio de Janeiro, is able to formulate questions that makes the visitor reflect on his role in society.
Developed in partnership with IBM, IRIS+ proposes and adaptation of the project of the company´s virtual intelligence, Watson, to the museum´s environment. The platform, besides answering to several questions, chats with the customer to understand his chief concerns about the questions presented in the exposition.
Based on the answers, the system presents a series of projects and initiatives the visitor may try, to make a compromise with the causes.


 

Municipality of Rio promotes Carnival agenda 2018

On the 11th of January, the Mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Marcelo Crivella and the President of Riotur, Marcelo Alves, presented the Project Carnival 2018, which encompassed all the events promoted by the bureau, at Palácio da Cidade. Among the events: street blocks, parades of teams of the Sambódromo(Sambadrome) and Estrada Intendente Magalhães, the programming of Arena Carnival Rio, stages and other official celebrations.
For this edition of Carnival, Riotur registered an unforeseen fundraising of private investment: R$38,5 million, hoping to levy R$3,5 billion; R$500 million more than 2017. The estimate number of revelers: 6 million in the city and 1,5 million tourists and 90% of hotel occupancy.
“For Rio de Janeiro it is important that these events are successful for the jobs and the income”, emphasized Marcelo Alves.
 
The blocks continue growing annually and optimize the Street Carnival of the City of Rio de Janeiro, and they were authorized to parade 473 blocks in the months of January and February , occupying the streets of zones south, north, east and downtown area.

SME expands number of bilingual schools

The number of bilingual schools in the municipal education network increased from 10 to 25 in 2018. The project promoted by the Municipal Secretariat of Education (SME), also includes two new languages: French and German.
The offer of another foreign language broadens the student´s knowledge universe, without leaving behind the Portuguese language. In bilingual schools, the pupils have 60% of classes in the official language of Brazil and 40% in the second language. In 2017 the network included nine bilingual schools of English and one offer of Spanish. This year, there are 12 Portuguese-Spanish schools, nine Portuguese-English schools, three Portuguese-German and one Portuguese –French.
“The pedagogical value of bilingualism is well established. The current experiences are quite positive. Consequently we decided to expand them”, evaluates the Municipal Secretary of Education, César Benjamin.






                              Municipality of Rio earns equipments of Olympic Games

On the 22th of February, the President of Technogym Brasil, Ruben Nieto, delivered 495 equipments used during the Olympics and Paralympics of 2016 to the Mayor of Rio, Marcelo Crivella and the Under-Secretariat of the Olympic Heritage, Patricia Amorim. The ceremony occurred in Arena Carioca 3, at Parque Olímpico, Barra da Tijuca.
The mentioned equipments are estimated in R$ 9 million, being part of Technogym Wellness Center, and a unit at Arena Carioca 3 in Barra da Tijuca, and another one in Parque Radical, in Deodoro.
“This center is another landmark of the Under Secretariat of the Olympic Heritage. These equipments will benefit several generations of athletes”, declared Mayor Marcelo Crivella.
The academies will be at the disposal of the high performance athletes, through strategic partnerships, and also Judo Federations, boxing, artistic gymnastics, badminton, futsal, table tennis and fights, which have already worked with the Under-Secretariat of the Olympic Heritage.

Rio Open 2018: the largest tennis competition of Latin America in Rio

http://riomailemm.rio.rj.gov.br/image?ci=1&mi=5029&name=TorneioRio.jpgOn the 19th of February, Rio de Janeiro hosted the Rio 2018 Open at the Brazilian Jockey Club in Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. The event, considered the major tennis tournament of South America, makes part of ATP World Tour, gathering 13 competitions of this magnitude, and three of them in gravel court – Rio, Barcelona and Hamburg. The tournament, which distributed more than R$ 5 million in awards, turned Jockey Club in a meeting point of sports admirers and confraternization with the families.
Besides games and trainings which occurred in nine gravel courts, one of them the central arena of the tournament, with a capacity for 6.200 people, there is also an interactive area- Leblon Boulevard, with several attractions for the audience, with stands, shops and a gourmet space. According to event´s organization, the 2017 edition attracted 45 thousand viewers, this year, an audience 10% higher than 2017.
The edition of 2018 featured the biggest names in present time sports, such as the current champion Dominic Thiem, the Croation Marin Cilic, French Gael Monfils and Spanish Pablo Carreño Busta.

 


Rio participates in U20 meeting in Paris

The City of Rio de Janeiro participated, through the International Relations Department, in the Forum C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group - Urban 20 Initiative, First Sherpa Meeting, from January 29 to 30 in the city of Paris. The main objective of the event was to bring together 20 of the world's largest cities for a first working meeting on how cities want to enrich the global development agenda, in particular with the nations that make up the G20 Summit.
The cities intend to produce a concise document with their respective lawsuits to be presented to the leaders of the countries that make up the G20 during its annual Summit, scheduled to take place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in October.
During the meeting, the representative of Rio exposed some of the policies of professional training through digital inclusion in projects and courses developed for the population of Rio de Janeiro, taking as an example the nine Knowledge Nets.

Municipal guard operates with 790 agents daily during the Carnival at Sambadrome

In the early morning of 9th of February, the interdictions in Presidente Vargas Avenue began, with the purpose of providing space for the allegorical carts of Series A Schools which paraded in Sambadrome. The operational planning of Carnival 2018 lasted until the morning of Ash Wednesday, on the 14th, and it was resumed in the area of Marquês de Sapucaí on Saturday, 17th, the day of the Parade do Champions. The traffic scheme was established by CET- Rio and was put into practice with GM-Rio, operating in pre-Carnival trigger points which occur in all the areas of the city.
790 Municipal officers daily in the area of Sambadrome and also in street Carnival, 250 officers in Intendente Magalhães (Parade of samba schools of series B and C) and, 6,140 officers in several actions of urban development,control and traffic monitoring during the parade of the official carnival blocks in all the areas of the city. All the actions were isolated and integrated with several agencies of the Municipality of Rio.





Municipality of Rio announces the creation of the Supporting Board of the Foreign Investor

The news was announced on the 7th of February, by a decree of Mayor Marcello Crivella in the Official Diary.
The new Council will be coordinated by the Mayor´s Office, through the International Relations Department and it will be composed by representatives of this Coordination and other four Municipal agencies: Secretariat of Development, Work and Innovation( SMDEI); Under-Secretariats of Planning and Governmental Management and Strategic Projects (both of the Municipal Secretariat of Civil Cabinet) and the Company of Tourism of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro – Riotur.
The International Relations Department may invite ad hoc (intended for this specific purpose) business entities, chambers of commerce, promotion agencies and consular representations, among others.
The decree considers projects and actions developed by Municipal Secretariats and the need of the Municipality to raise funds in projects of numerous sectors as a factor of economic and social development.
 




Municipality of Rio launches Municipal Plan Of Solidarity Economy

On the 26th of February, Mayor Marcelo Crivella together with the Secretary of Development, Work and Innovation, Clarissa Garotinho, launched the Municipal Plan of Solidary Economy, at the Palácio da Cidade in Botafogo, south zone of Rio.
The Solidary Economy has become a modern and efficient working option for citizens of several cities around the world who, through this arrangement, manage to face in a positive manner the impacts and transformations caused by changes in the contemporary global economy.
Examples are the producer´s cooperatives, of fishermen and craftsmen; service providers and any enterprise established in a solidary manner. The estimate is that, nowadays, about 600 people be formally inserted in this way of working, moving more than R$ 2 million yearly. The plan launched by the Municipality of Rio intends to stimulate this sector of the economy and dictate the guidelines for its growth.




 International day of braille

On the 4th of January, is celebrated the International Day of Braille, a natural reading system for people with vision impairments, created in the XIX century by Frenchman Louis Braille. Reflecting upon these people with visual deficiency(blind and low sight), the Under Secretariat of People with Deficiency(SUBPD) carries out, through the Center of Technology and Innovation(NTI) services of rehabilitation in Braille (guidance on Braille writing) and rehabilitation in Dosvox.
Dosvox is a computer´s screen reader. It reads, not only what is on the screen, but also what is being written by the wearer. The Operational Sytem Dosvox makes possible for blind people to use a common microcomputer (PC) in order to perform a series of tasks, thus acquiring a high level of autonomy while studying and working.
Other services provided by the Under Secretariat are: accessibility to applications of smartphones and Poet Compact, a scanner which reproduces in audio what has been scanned. Poet Compact enables the digitalization of documents and books, for example, playing in audio immediately.


Rio participates in the Meeting of Directors and Coordinators of the cities network UCCI

The Municipality of Rio de Janeiro participated, through the International Relations Department, of the XII Meeting of Directors and Coordinators of the UCCI and Conference on Integral Cooperation between Ibero-American Cities: Dialogue of Actors, held from January 29 to 31 in Madrid , Spain.
During the meeting, preparations were made for the XVIII General Assembly of the UCCI, to be held in April in San Jose, Costa Rica. Next, the UCCI's relations with international organizations, the presentation of the communication strategy of the network and the main actions that have been carried out, the management of the financial resources and the scheduled programming for the year 2018 were discussed. The cities included new events in programming, with Rio highlighting VeloCity's performance in June.
On the last day were held the Days on Integral Cooperation, with the presentation of projects already carried out or underway, within the scope of the Comprehensive Cooperation Program of the UCCI, financed by the City of Madrid. The Fundamentals of the Program were presented, within the proposal of the Madrid Solidarity Forum - which brings together the proposal of international action of the City of Madrid, regarding cooperation actions - and the projects of Mexico City/San José, Asunción/Montevideo and Bogotá/La Paz/Quito. Rio de Janeiro proposed a project in the area of
​​Citizen Security, with the objective of knowing other experiences of Prevention of Crimes through Environmental Design (PCAAA).

COPPE / UFRJ Business Incubator is among the 20 best in the world

On the 23th of February, UBI Global, a Swedish research institution specializing in the analysis of incubators and accelerators worldwide, announced the ranking in which the COPPE / UFRJ Business Incubator is among the 20 best in the world. The institution competed with more than 800 incubators around the world in the category "World Top Business Incubator - Managed by University", which takes into consideration issues such as jobs generated by resident and graduated companies, business survival rate, turnover, attraction of investment and number of graduates and incubators. UBI aims to help university-based incubators and accelerators become more efficient and competitive through data insights, best practices, and network services.
 

Tourists approve Rio's safety during carnival

The Carioca Carnival has been attracting more and more attention of tourists, always with high expectations regarding the days of revelry in Rio. Despite the cases of violence registered during the period, national and foreign tourists considered the city safe. According to a survey carried out by Riotur and ESPM-Rio in Sambadrome, on the days 10,11 and 12 of February, 42% of foreign tourists and 34% of the Brazilian tourists perceived safety in Rio as good. Among the foreigners, 17% rated the safety excellent, 29% average, 6% bad, and 6% terrible. Among national tourists, 12% considered safety excellent, 19% average,19% bad and 16% terrible.
In total, 536 people were interviewed, 51% residents in Rio, 19% foreign tourists and 30% Brazilian tourists. According to the analysis, 95% of the foreign tourists considered that the visit came up or exceed their expectations and 95,9% would advise the trip. Among national tourists, 93,8% considered that the visit came up or exceeded their expectations and 97,4% would advise the trip to other people.

The Réveillon of Copacabana marked the beginning of program 'Rio de Janeiro a Janeiro', annual calendar with around 90 strategic events in the areas of culture, sports, tourism and business. The initiative which connects the Municipality of Rio, Federal Government, Riotur and well known businessmen, has the purpose to start up a movement all year round with events which contribute to enhance the flow of tourists, generate income for the City of Rio de Janeiro, besides displaying the touristic potential of the city for the world.
Until the end of January, Fundação Getulio Vargas(FGV) approved new projects for 2018.

Pierre Verger signs photography of exhibition “Dorminhocos



The French anthropologist and photographer Pierre Verger travelled around the world with a sharp eye and a camera in his hands, always running away from clichés and interested in unusual subjects. In the exhibition Dorminhocos”( Sleepers), on display at CAIXA Cultural do Rio de Janeiro from 20th of January until 18th March 2018, bringing together 145 photographs which portrays the manner of people relaxing in public places.

The images were produced between the decades of 1930 and 1950, in several countries such as Argentina, Peru, Congo, China, French Polynesia, Guatemala and Mexico, In Brazil, Verger depicted sleepers in Bahia, where he lived for 50 years, and also in Pernambuco and Maranhão. Curated by Raphael Fonseca, the visitors enter free of charge and officially launchs the exhibit´s catalogue, which will be distributed free.





Special carnival programming at Terreirão Do Samba is a success



During Carnival, Terreirão do Samba welcomed about 24 thousand people between 9 and 14 of February, a great achievement. Only on Carnival´s Sunday, the audience was next to maximum occupancy of ten thousand people, and the gates had to be closed down.
Announced by the Municipal Secretariat of Culture in the end of January, the Carnival agenda of Terreirão do Samba included 42 shows and more than 100 hours of revelry.
“ The city must beat the Samba from January to January, and we have found partners for this trekking. Terreirão is operating for the last six months with activities, giving room for the artists’, declared Nilcemar Nogueira, Municipal Secretary of Culture.


 
 

Trio Bienal brings together works in Botanical Garden and City of Arts


Between the months of December and March TRIO Bienal – International Three-dimensional Bienal of Rio do Janeiro, in its second edition, presented works on different media, however always three-dimensional, the only one with such a profile among all the others in the world, bringing together around 50 Brazilian and Foreign artists.

The exhibition was divided in three modules related to elements of nature: air and water( works of artists such as Nelson Leirner, Alexandre Vogler, Tunga, the Indian artist Rekha Sameer who lives in London and the American Amy Cannestra), which was on display in City of a; and earth, which gathers in the Botanical Garden of Rio works of Antonio Bokel, Ivani Pedrosa, Pietrina Checcacci, among other artists.

 

 




Cidade das Artes receives the Cultural Week of China
